Metro Rail Project in Pune

Introduction

Good news for the folks in Pune, because Pune now has officially been given the green signal for their Metro Rail project. Metro Rail Project in Pune. India already has 8 Metro lines up and running and the Pune Metro line will begin its ‘Groud-Breaking’ ceremony on the 24th of December during the time when the Prime Minister is going to be visiting the city.

The Pune Metro is going to be divided into 2 phases, with Phase I’s initial estimate cost being 7000 crores and Phase II’s being close to 3200 crores in 2013. But now the overall Metro Project cost is estimated to be Rs 11,522 crores! This rise in price took place due to the delay in the execution of the project.

The first Phase will span approximately 14.7 kms connecting Ramwadi to Vanaz while the second Phase would connect Swargate and Pimpri Chinchwad spanning 16.6 kms roughly.

It is projected that the entire Pune Metro will be up and running by the beginning of 2022, which is 5 years from the date of commencement of work.

Now what does this mean for Pune?

Well, for starters this Metro project comes just in time to save the city from its increasing traffic and also be able to help improve the general standard of living in the city. The Bangalore Metro a.k.a Namma Metro for example, has been running their Metro service for a couple of years now and has been so helpful in easing their traffic problems. A bike ride from Indiranagar to Vijaynagar which usually takes more than one hour can easily be traversed within half an hour without all the pollution and stress thanks to the metro!

Lesser traffic also means lesser pollution. Pollution is one of those factors which has been largely ignored over time. Thankfully, this can be considered as one step towards controlling the pollution issue.
